Hören: Soundwalk Collective with Patti & Jesse Smith „Killer Road“

Killer Road is a sound exploration of the tragic death of Nico, Velvet Underground vocalist and 60s icon, while riding her bike on the island of Ibiza in the summer of 1988. A hypnotic meditation on the idea of perpetual motion and the cycle of life and death, the live performance features Patti Smith lending her unique voice to the last poems written by the artist. Soundwalk Collective & Jesse Paris Smith use a travel log of field recordings, harmonics, and samples of Nico's signature instrument, the harmonium, to create a magnetic soundscape. With live visuals from video artist Tina Frank.

For over fifteen years, Soundwalk Collective has recomposed field recordings into narrative journeys. Live performances are diverse, immersive, and site specific, sometimes developing into installations or permanent works. By exploring and documenting the world around us through its sounds, the Collective abstracts and re-composes narrative sound pieces through fragments of reality to form distinct audible journeys.

Founded in the early 2000s by Stephan Crasneanscki, the collective is based in New York and Berlin. Its three core members are Stephan Crasneanscki (FR), Simone Merli (IT), and Kamran Sadeghi (IR/US). Live the collective uses a combination of custom-cut vinyl records with multiple turntables, tape machines, laptop computers, or custom designed modular systems. While sound and music are their main focus, the Soundwalk Collective also creates light/video projections for site-specific performances in order to create unique atmospheres and environments for each presentation. Their live performances may also be transformed into installations.

The Collective's recent installations and performances were shown at Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris); MADRe Museum of Contemporary Art (Napoli); New Museum (New York); National Museum of Singapore NMS; Abu Dhabi Art; Maison des Arts de Creteils (Paris); Fes Festival of World Sacred Music; Villa de Noailles – Centre d'Art et de Culture Contemporain (Hyères); Florence Gould Hall (New York); Lille Fantastic; ARMA17 (Moscow); Berghain Panorama Bar (Berlin); MUDAM (Luxembourg); TAP (Poitiers); MuCEM (Marseilles); CTM Festival (Berlin).
