Tanz im August: Plateau Effect

Cullberg Ballet / Jefta van Dinther (SE)

The young dancer and choreographer Jefta van Dinther, now resident in Berlin and Stockholm, quickly made a name in the dance world with his fierce and extremely physical style of movement. In his first collaboration with Sweden’s most renowned dance ensemble – founded in 1967 by Birgit Cullberg, brought to international fame by her son Mats Ek, and today directed by Gabriel Smeets – Jefta van Dinther has developed a choreography of bewilderment and disarray.

Nine highly energetic dancing bodies tell the story of an impending catastrophe. An important role is played by a huge curtain and a voluminous sail. Jefta van Dinther deals with the life of a community under pressure, in a poetic-utopian landscape, caught up in constant movement, building, taking down, pulling together and letting go. His nightmare scenario is intensified by David Kiers’ pulsating music and Minna Tiikkainen’s dramatic lighting. At the highest point of tension, the plateau, people appear as if under a magnifying glass: isolated and broken. However, nothing is as it seems.
