The Lake presents #3: „The Modular Synthesizer“

With Driftmachine (Tied & Tickled Trio, Saroos), Francesco Donadello (Vox-Ton) and DJ-Sets by Mads Brauer (Efterklang) and Marc Weiser

You’ve heard the sound many times before, most likely without knowing it. From the legendary music of Kraftwerk to the theme of Doctor Who. It looks looks like an old telephone central and works in a sort of similar way. Yet the sound coming out is quite unlike a human voice of a telephone... It’s the sound of the future as it sounded back in the 60’s and in some way, it still does sound like the future. More and more musicians around the world is using this instrument in their music making, and creative minds keep expanding the field by inventing new tools for further sonic explorations.

On the third event hosted by The Lake Radio (www.thelakeradio.com) in Roter Salon, we’ll take a closer look at one of the earliest ancestors of electronic music; “The Modular Synthesizer”. An incredibly fascinating instrument, introduced commercially by Moog & Buchla back in 1963, based on an invention by physicist Hugh Le Caine, who would have turned 101 this year. The Modular synthesizer exists, as it name implies, of "modules” - synthesizer building blocks that allows you to synthesise pretty much any kind of imaginable and unimaginable sounds. It’s an infinite world of sound, a doorway to a sonic world where you might lose completely track of time and place. As a musician but also as a listener. On March 16th in Roter Salon we’ll attempt to dive in together and lose time collectively.

To present the machinery we found some of Berlin’s finest modular synthesiser live acts; Driftmachine & Francesco Donadello. Thomas Kircher from the world famous modular synthesizer shop Schneidersladen in Berlin, will give an introduction, sharing some of the history and stories related to them. Maybe even demystify the phenomenon.

Mads Brauer (Efterklang) & Marc Weiser are providing you with music and sounds from deep down in The Lake
